Did you know that Instagram has been quietly removing some accounts’ Posts and Reels from appearing in hashtag results or in the Explore Page. Basically, it stops the content being recommended to non-followers if it thinks that you have not followed their guidelines. An example of not following guidelines would be using popular but not relevant hashtags. The process was called ‘shadow banning’ – you wouldn’t be told by Instagram but you might notice less reach or zero reach from hashtags.
In December they launched a new tool that tells you if they are no longer recommending your content to non-followers. Simply go to your Instagram Settings / Account Settings and then check Account Status. Check to see if there is a green tick next to Recommendation Guidelines and Community Guidelines. If there isn’t a green tick there is an issue and they will tell you.
