Before Instagram rolls out new updates they are often tested on small user groups. 3 tests have been spotted recently so it’s very possible that we will see these implemented on Instagram in the coming months.
1. “Unhiding” likes
Back in 2019 Instagram removed the like count on posts and they explained that it was to help people who didn’t like their posts being compared to others based on likes. For example, teenagers are often self conscious if their posts aren’t seen to be as popular as their friends’ posts. However, Instagram is testing the ability for users to switch the like count back on if they wish and it is something that can be done in settings.
2. Vertical Feed for Stories
Some users have spotted a vertical feed for Stories that mimics Tik Tok where you swipe up and down to navigate stories instead of left and right. This would follow on from Instagram already rolling out Reels which is a copy of Tik Tok and it is likely because recent studies show that users are spending more time / engaging more on Tik Tok than users are on apps like Instgram and Facebook.
3. Removing the ability to share posts to stories
Some users have spotted a notice saying that they can’t share their posts as a story. It’s believed that this will be part of a drive by Instagram to reduce the amount of overlap between the Newsfeed and Stories and that they want users to create unique content for Stories
Lots of changes likely in the coming months.
